Another year in the Shuswap accelerating into the past, and a new one coming forth. One of time, paint, passion, music and new decisions impatiently awaited. Oh, time and age are catching up now with certain things to be done yet. I am ready to steam ahead.
There is quite a handsome young coyote who has been making early morning rounds on the frozen lake this week. He is investigating the beaver lodges along the shoreline for he knows the otters are here now too. And they know he is here. Again. Home. His too. Him and many other animals in this winter wetland habitat.
There is a lot of snow up here now. And had it not been for tracking down the grader yesterday, we wouldn’t be out of here till Spring time!
The small herd of White-tailed deer are staying pretty close to the garden area with all this snow. Their trails meander throughout the yard staying forever present and undisturbed. Excellent swimmers and very quick to disappear when I have my camera out. Some times they are at the back door, and some times, I have to go out and sneak around to find them.
All is quiet on the snow covered surface, but a few inches into the frozen earthen of sandy soils, are well packed nests of decorated shelled hatchlings. Hibernating until May long weekend, if the temperature is just right. And if they come out then, the Fireflies may also make an appearance. But hold on right now, as there is still snow here and tomorrow is going to be another very snowy day. Maybe a snowshoe day…
Last winter a Lynx was on the ice at the far end of the lake. I have seen eagles, rabbits, otters, lots of coyotes, deer, moose and a skunk (that was probably little Fortis) on the ice. Along with bear and bear cubs on the spring shoreline near and far. Interested and interesting.
The sky has been so grey and my easel so still. The Shuswap horizon has been clouded in and no time allotted, but second blog required for my sagas and series, sets and sequels, sisters and Italian gold sequins. And all the shelter of the Chestnut Tree of One Hundred Horses. Noble Knights, your banner still flies. The easel may be still but the pen is not, although obsolete, it takes a different mode now. Adjust or change, adjust or change.
Need bird seed on the list. Out of 15 little Black-capped Chickadees on the ground under my feeder, there seems to be one little impostor. Wee guy, long tail and pointy little nose. But nobody seemed to mind and there was enough seed for all. And the bagpipes bring back old memories, that will now be history like the rest. One day I will see the castles too.
